Damned Electronics!

A Sample of what I have to make a presentation on in electronics on tuesday.... Damnit its hard material!

The Diac

This is a bi-directional trigger diode used mainly in firing Triacs and Thyristors in AC control circuits. Its circuit symbol (shown in figure 3a) is similar to that of a Triac, but without the gate terminal, in fact it is a simpler device and consists of a PNP structure (like a transistor without a base) and acts basically as two diodes connected cathode to cathode as shown in figure 3b.

Figure 3. The Diac Circuit symbol and an equivalent diagram using diodes.

Figure 3a, Diac Circuit SymbolFigure 3b, Equivalent circuit using diodes
The DIAC is designed to have a particular break over voltage, typically about 30 volts, and when a voltage less than this is applied in either polarity, the device remains in a high resistance state with only a small leakage current flowing.
Once the break over voltage is reached however, in either polarity, the device exhibits a negative resistance as can be seen from the characteristic curve in Figure 4.

Figure 4. Typical Diac Characteristics.

Figure 4, Typical Diac Characteristics
When the voltage across the diac exceeds about 30 volts (a typical break-over voltage) current flows and an increase in current is accompanied by a drop in the voltage across the Diac. Normally, Ohm's law states that an increase in current through a component causes an increase in voltage across that component; however the opposite effect is happening here, therefore the Diac exhibits negative resistance at break-over.
In the simple power control circuit in Figure 2 the Diac is used to trigger a Triac by the "Phase Control" method. The AC mains waveform is phase shifted by the RC circuit so that a reduced amplitude, phase delayed version of the mains waveform appears across C. As this wave reaches the break over voltage of the Diac, it conducts and discharges C into the gate of the Triac, so triggering the Triac into conduction. The Triac then conducts for the remainder of the mains half cycle, and when the mains voltage passes through zero it turns off. Some time into the next (negative) half cycle, the voltage on C reaches break over voltage in the other polarity and the Diac again conducts, providing an appropriate trigger pulse to turn on the Triac.
By making R a variable value, the amount of phase delay of the waveform across C can be varied, allowing the time during each half cycle at which the Triac fires to be controlled. In this way, the amount of power delivered to the load can be varied.
Note that in practical control circuits using Thyristors, Triacs and Diacs, large voltages are switched very rapidly. This can give rise to serious RF interference, and steps must be taken in circuit design to minimise this. Also as Mains is present in the circuit there must be some form of safe isolation between the low voltage control components (e.g. the Diac and phase shift circuits) and the mains "live" components, e.g. the Triac and load. This can easily be achieved by "Opto-coupling" the low voltage control circuit to the high voltage power control (Triac or SCR) part of the circuit.

Great Day!!!! ................

So, I wake up more exausted than a 110 year old man, which makes perfect sense cause I only got 9.5 hours of sleep!!!!!!!!!!!! ????????

Get to school, 5 minutes late. GREAT!

Barely make it through till lunch, and I decide to head over to speak to my co-worker face-to-face and see if I can convince him to take my shift on Sunday, So I can have a fantastic little rock climbing trip down to the states.

Get in my truck.... and ........ Nothing. Not even a click. Its fucked.

No big deal. Just means Ill have to call Co-Worker. I call and he tells me straight up, its not going to happen. Great!!! I cant do anything all long-weekend cause of one damn shift.!

My classroom Buddy came and jumped the truck for me after classes...

Then it died a block down the street. (After I told him not to worry about me)

After a good walk home, Jumped on my motorcycle to get around, and it starts raining hard. Plus I have no head light on the damn bike and it starts getting really dark, faster than I thought.

. And.... Im just generally grouchy.... LoL

(Oh ya, and the guys I had to bail on for the climbing trip, I also had plans to hit the climbing gym tonight, but forget that shit!)

I hope that was a satisfactory RANT, to make all other RANTS pale in comparison.

Been A GREAT! Day!

Enjoy the rest of yours!!!

Nothing Matters More,

Than a healthy mind.

And a healthy body.

Without those two, I don't believe you can achieve any sense of happiness.

I know its been said before. But a few things have happened to me and those around me this last week that has driven that point home.

You need to care for those two. Maintain them. Cherish them.

That Dang Smell...

So,

I was walking around campus yesterday...

And this familiar, pungent, odor kept following me around.

It was my body odor.

And, though It won't help meet any girls, It gave me a nostalgic feeling of rememberance. Of when I've lived in the bush, or had any real outdoor adventure. That smell is something that I relish.

It is the smell of sweat, heath, and adventure.

It is the smell of freedom.

The smell of nature.

The smell of mosquitoes.

The smell of campfire.

The smell of hiking.

The smell of a cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Its MY smell.

Creature Fear - Interpretation vs. Reality

My ridiculous interpretation (By when I just listen to it and type) of the song "Creature Fear" By Bon Iver

Interpretation:

Seminary Souls
I was fold by your car
I was lost by your food
was a lonely visbly wrong
say you are the wrong

So many foriegn laws
so ready to be found
so ready for us
so ready for us

A creature fear

I was teased by your blouse
spit out by your mouth
I was loud by your lone
Seminary Soul

Tear on
Tear on
Take all lll llllll
Soft blood and nose

Seminary floor

So many territories
ready to reform
dont let it form us
dont let it form us
a creature fear

So many Foriegn flaws
so many tourists

a creature fear

Reality:

I was full by your count
I was lost but your fool
Was a long visit wrong?
Say you are the only

So many foreign worlds
(So relatively fucked)
So ready for us
So ready for us,
The creature fear

Teased by your blouse
Spit out by your mouth
I was loud by your lowered
Seminary sold

Tear on tail on
Take all on the wind on
The soft bloody nose
Sign another floor...

The so many territories
Ready to reform
Don't let it form us
Don't let it form us
The creature fear

So did he foil is 'own?
Is he ready to reform?
So many torahs
So many for us
The creature fear

Why do I have to SPEND?

So,

I bought a computer this week. Or should I say, I built a computer, with a bunch of parts I bought, amounting to around 900$.

Intell i5 2500k - 3.3Ghz stock, Unlocked, and overclockable to over 4Ghz
MSI P65 motherboard - with every bell and whistle on the market. Intense overclocking ability
Thermaltake Tower - a solid desktop tower, with lots of room for equipment and cooling capabilities
Nividia 8800gs - My old video card, still a very capable mule - Im going to overclock it as well before I sell
New CD rom
New Harddrive
New power supply - 500w
Windows 7 Professional

Now that I have it...

I don't know,

Im just not satisfied.

I mean, It was fun to build up, and I did have some extra money for which to spend; if I chose. But, Im disappointed in myself now.

So, off to Craigslist.ca it goes. I will try to get as much for it back as I can.

Once you've hit rock bottom financially, which I did before, I've become more worried and careful with spending money. Not that it helped me here.

A old man told me once, "Money in the bank is your friend, with it, you can do anything" But, once you spend it, you lose that friend.

I have lost that friend.

It was just a good aquaintance, and Im sure I'll me able to earn that friend back...

Its hard to understand what it is that makes me so desperate to buy. As soon as I had realised that I was doing well, and had extra cash to burn, a squad of female Amazon warriors couldn't stop me from spending it.

I feel a little better now, that I've decided to try to mop up the damage, and sell the beast.

And, I think that if I play my cards right, I could come out without much of a hit.

Bush Taste

Now that I had a taste of the bush life. I really think that I could live a content life on the fringe, wrapping myself in solitude and peace. Or at least, for a little while.

I miss the simplicity.

Solitude.
Rising with the sun.
Bedding down with the moon.

Fire.

The four months up there has changed me in ways hard to explain. I've become harder.

One day, again, I'll give it a harder shot.

Irritated Bowel Syndrome...

So I have a nice development of Aggrivated Bowel Syndrome. or, Irritated Bowel Syndrome. But I prefer the former (My own invention!)

Its so good!!

Now I don't have to worry about anything other than the toilet.

Simplifies my life...

Little Trip Down South

The 'Feathers' at the Gorge near Vantage Washington. Fantastic climbing, all so accessible and the rock was very interesting. Though, one thing I thought a little scary, was that the rock had a strong tendancy to break under your grip, and get accidently thrown at your belayer...

Moved on to Leavenworth to get a different style of climbing, and some shade! It was freakin' HOT in Vantage. And here I started the Perfect Fire.

Of course, leave it to me to not get good pictures of any of the climbs we did... But at least I got these two on a big hike. By the way, I didn't realise how much my endurance has changed since a few years ago.... Not in a good way.

Is game of thrones good?

""Is Game of Thrones that good?

The new series! It appears to have an excellent rating on IMDb, and it's currently the most popular series on many charts. But I never thought a medieval kind of series could be that popular. So, is it good? :)

I'm gonna sum Game of Thrones (and its subsequent seasons based on the book series) up for you:

Imagine the Lord of the Rings. Now imagine Frodo and Sam FAILED on their quest. Sauron captured Frodo and Sam. The Dark Lord regained the One Ring. He slaughtered Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf, defeated the heroes and the host of Men and Elves, and conquered all of Middle Earth.

Now imagine the entire agonizing process is being slowly unfolded over the course of many books/seasons. You keep hoping and praying, oh puhlease, don't let the good guys die, let them succeed for once, because they are trying so hard... but then they keep dying on you.

The few remaining surviving heroes were scattered, struggling for survival. And in their struggle for survival, they had to adapt... and in the process, they became less and less noble, less and less good. They had to lie, steal, cheat and kill to survive. And the only thing that kept them going was the hope of vengeance. (Those who refused to comprise would die -- in this series, death is the ultimate price of doing the right thing.)

Oh, and the bad guys did die in the end. But not because they were defeated by the good guys. The bad guys died because after they won, they turned on each other. And you get to see that over the course of several books/seasons (while seeing the long fall of the "good guys".)

So, is that good?""

"Oh my sweet summer child..."

"...you don't want to wait 9 months? Oh my sweet summer child what do you know of waiting? Waiting is for the long night. When George R.R. Martin hides for years, and children are born and live and die before the next book comes out. That is the time for waiting my little lord."

I found this on Youtube. Hahahaha!! Epic Epic Epic.

When you've waited literally decades between George's books, like I have and many others, a mere 9 months for the new HBO season to come out is a spit in the bucket.

Its that time of the week again...>>>>>

MY DAY OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh sweet blessed sleep, how you are the balm of all woes.

Then a perfect day spent with the perfect mix of production and leisure, a calm evening reading a good book with well-cooked food, and a beer or two. Mix in a little exercise and motorcycle riding in there, and thats a pretty decent day!

Too bad it ends tommorow.. =(
